“Students
tell us how important the scholarship is in their
lives and how it is their dream to one day support
students, too. It means a lot to hear them say that.”
— Mitch and Elva Sill, donors
“How did you get to this point in life?” That
question seems to arise each year when 20 UMD Sill
Scholars from the Labovitz School of Business and Economics
are admiring the view of Lake Superior from the bluff-top
home of donors Mitch and Elva Sill.
The annual get-together
is an opportunity for the Sills to meet those whose
lives they’ve changed, and for Mitch, ’54
B.A., to be a mentor. “I tell them about the
life of an entrepreneur,” he says, “about
the risks, some of the losses, and how you pick yourself
up and go on to the next opportunity.”
Mitch,
who was president of Road Machinery and Supplies Co.
for 35 years, has chaired two UMD capital campaigns.
But he and Elva most enjoy their time with students: “It’s
one of the highlights of the year for us to meet them
and hear about their lives.” |
