12 Elected to Board of Trustees
of University of Minnesota Foundation

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, November 18, 2005 – The University of Minnesota Foundation Board of Trustees elected a new chair and 12 new members at its annual meeting Nov. 12.
Elected as chair was Fred R. Friswold, chair and CEO, Tonka Equipment Co. Friswold, a 1958 graduate of the Carlson School of Management, has served on the UMF board since 1988, most recently as vice chair. Other officers who were reelected are Marilyn Carlson Nelson, chair and CEO, Carlson Companies, Inc., as vice chair; Stanley S. Hubbard, chair, Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc., as secretary; and B. Kristine Johnson, principal, Affinity Capital Management, as treasurer.
Twelve new members were elected for three-year terms on the board. They are:
- Jon R. Campbell, CEO, Minnesota Region, and Vice President, Wells Fargo Bank
- Martin E. Davis, CEO, Cambria, and Manager, Davisco Foods International Inc.
- Judith K. Dutcher, president, Minnesota Community Foundation
- Deborah L. Hopp, vice president, MSP Communications, and publisher, MplsSt Paul Magazine
- Robert M.A. Johnson, Anoka County Attorney
- Lynn Nagorske, president and COO, TCF Financial Corporation
- William E. Pedersen, Jr., partner, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates
- Jörg A. Pierach, founder and president, Fast Horse, Inc.
- Robert C. Pohlad, chairman and CEO, PepsiAmericas Inc., and associate, Pohlad Companies
- Lois E. Quam, CEO, Ovations—A UnitedHealth Group Co.
- E. Thomas Sullivan, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost, University of Minnesota
- Simon KaWo Wong, group chairman and managing director, Kampery Group, China
“I am very excited to welcome these new members to our board,” said Gerald B. Fischer, president and CEO of the University of Minnesota Foundation. “Our trustees are incredibly talented and respected individuals who will bring new ideas to our important work of engaging the resources of the private sector in support of the University of Minnesota.”
Several trustees were also recognized for their long and distinguished service on the board. Four who had previously served as board chairs were elected as Life Trustees. They are Russell M. Bennett, Marvin Borman, James R. Campbell, and Donald F. Wright. Elected as trustees emeriti were Dale L. Bachman, Burton D. Cohen, Richard F. McNamara, Linda J. Mona, H. Bryan Neel and Patricia B. Spence.
The University of Minnesota Foundation, an independent non-profit organization founded in 1962, raises and manages gifts from alumni and friends to build excellence at the University of Minnesota. In Fiscal 2005, $180 million in gifts and pledges were recorded from more than 92,000 donors. The Foundation manages an endowment of about $1 billion.
“Fiscal year 2005 was a good year, with progress made on our scholarship drive, gains in the number of alumni donors, and strong increases in our endowment,” said Fischer. “Growth in private support will be critical if the University is to become one of the world’s top three public research universities.”
