Hubbard Broadcasting Gives $5 Million to U Astronomy Department for Telescope

The University of Minnesota Department of Astronomy has received a gift of $5 million from Hubbard Broadcasting, Inc. to purchase a share in a powerful new telescope now under construction in Arizona. The gift will provide the funding for university faculty and students to have guaranteed access to the new Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), the world's most powerful telescope.

"Having access to this telescope will immediately place the University of Minnesota among a handful of major players in the field of astronomy," said H. Ted Davis, dean of the Institute of Technology, where the Department of Astronomy is located. "Until now, we've lacked the facilities that give us the ability to make truly path-breaking discoveries. This gift will make this possible. It will put Minnesota in the forefront of research in astronomy."
