Impact
on Students
Because Maceo
Wright was a stellar three-sport athlete
in his Burnsville high school, a number of
universities courted him. He chose the University
of Minnesota, Duluth, after working out a
deal to take a break from athletics during
his freshman year.
It was a risky move, but allowed Wright the ability to earn
a 3.4 GPA, choose a major—graphic design—and volunteer
mentoring students of color in the Duluth public school system
where he developed a unique program. “It’s designed
for at-risk youth of color, and the focus is three-pronged:
arts, academics and association,” he explains.
Wright’s professors are impressed with his commitment
to academics and extra-curricular activities, earning him
a number of merit-based awards, including the coveted Olive
Anna Tezla School of Fine Arts scholarship.
