Ngoc Nguyen marvels at her parents’ courage
coming with nothing to America from Vietnam
when she was five. Her
father, a farmer, enrolled in a two-year vocational school
where he struggled to learn English and a trade at the same
time. “My parents instilled in me the importance of
education,” says Nguyen. “They believed that
if I did well in school, I would not have to live a hard
life like they did.”
Knowing she would need to pay for college, Nguyen took college
courses in high school and worked full-time during summers.
She calculated she would need to work 30 hours a week, but
thanks to a Jay and Rose Phillips Family Scholarship, Nguyen
can turn her attention back to her studies in the Carlson
School of Management.
